Throwback Thursday and Elizabeth Higgins
Elizabeth Twistington Higgins was born
in 1923 and went on to become a beloved British ballerina. Because she could pirouette so well, one teacher called her Twizzy. Although Elizabeth never
achieved the dance fame some others did at the time, her renown came in an
unexpected way.
Stricken with polio at age 30, she
became one of the unlucky victims that required an iron lung. Undaunted, she
taught herself to breathe by using her neck muscles, and went on to develop a
new artistic career as an author and an accomplished artist.
In addition to her beautiful paintings, she
wrote Still Life (1969). A book on
her life and art by Marc Alexander entitled The
Dance Goes On was published in December 2016.
Elizabeth Twistington Higgins died in
1990.
