Throwback Thursday and Neils Kehlet
Born in Denmark on September 6, 1938,
Neils Kehlet entered the Royal Danish Ballet School in 1948. By 1957 he became
a member of the company.
He danced many classical roles: Blue Bird in Sleeping Beauty (see the Link
of the Day below), Don
Quixote pas de deux, Peter in Peter
and the Wolf, and one of the leading male roles in Etudes. He may be best known for creating the role of Colas in Frederick
Ashton’s La Fille Mal Gardee that was
staged for the Royal Danish Ballet in 1964.
An 2005 article about The Bournonville
Festival that marked the centenary of the choreographer’s death in 1979 by Tobi
Tobias states: “…Niels Kehlet’s vivid
naturalness in mime roles—he was an ingenious Gert in Kermesse, playing several layers of
comedy at once. But Kehlet, at forty-one still the company’s signal example of
the ebullience that is Bournonville,
was given only the reprise of Napoli in
which to display that unique virtuosity that is a metaphor for joy.”
He was also an actor, performing in Flagermusen (1968).
