Wacky Wednesday Quicksand
A common problem, especially for
beginning dancers, is remembering that once the foot leaves the floor it should be fully stretched. And I mean fully and
completely stretched.
You may remember Ballet Secret # 16b: When lifting the foot off the floor, imagine
a stamp being peeled off an envelope.” Here
is another image that works especially well for younger children who love the
squishy nature of it: Imagine pulling
your foot out of quicksand. You can also ask students to imagine the sound the
foot might make as it pulls free, thus combining both visual and auditory
components.
As always, it is best to explain what
the objective is (in this case making sure the foot is fully stretched), before
adding the mental image to the exercise.

Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
