Superstitious Saturday Haunted Orpheum
In this month of haunts and spirits, I
thought I’d talk about some famous haunted theaters. Today it’s the Orpheum
Theater in Memphis, Tennessee. Yes, although Europe is heavily populated with
theater ghosts, America has its fair share.
Originally constructed in 1890 the
theater burned thirty years later but was rebuilt. The most famous ghost here (there
is more than one) is a girl named Mary who is believed to have died in one of three
ways: she was hit and killed by a horse
and buggy or she was killed in a car accident – or chillingly, she fell to her
death from the balcony of the theater. For another story on her death see the Link of the Day below.
Audience members have heard Mary
laughing and running up and down the aisles, and a few claim to have seen her
sitting in her favorite seat: C-5. In 1977 the road show of Fiddler on the Roof
played at the Orpheum and the cast became so concerned about this ghost that
they held a séance in
an attempt to speak with her. The séance revealed several other ghosts besides Mary.
It is also said that Mary turns all the box
seats backwards if she doesn’t like the performance.
