Mad Monday Misalignment

I talk a lot about correct alignment and how it works together with equal and opposite energy patterns. But why is it so important to have good skeletal alignment? After all, we’ve all seen dancers that despite being a bit off (wonky) still manage to make things happen.

The answer is this: if your body is correctly aligned, movements are efficient and effective. Dancing is easier. But when the body is misaligned, although things (turns, balances, etc.) can still be achieved, the body does so by compensating. That is, the body may grip muscles to hold on, lean in the opposite direction to add counterweight, or add extra, unnecessary impetus to force movements to happen. Dancers are nothing if not determined!

Misalignment produces extra stuff that is unnecessary at best and harmful at worst. Overdeveloped muscles, undue stress on joints, and just plain working the body too hard all have negative repercussions, and bad habits will be formed. Now that’s scary.

Therefore, correct alignment is critical. Never underestimate its importance.
