Terminology Tuesday Reculant
Emboîté
en reculant (ahn bwah TAY ahn ruh kew LAHN) means an emboîté that
moves away from the audience, or upstage. It is a term of the French school,
and its opposite is emboîté en
descendant, which moves toward the audience, or downstage.
These terms most likely come from the
time when stages were raked (slanted toward the audience) which is where the
terms upstage and downstage come from.
