Throwback Thursday and Kirk Alyn

Throwback Thursday and Kirk Alyn

Born in Oxford, New Jersey on October 8, 1910, Kirk Alyn’s real name was John Feggo Jr. His career began on Broadway, in the chorus. He appeared in many shows in the 1930s such as Girl Crazy, Of Thee I Sing, and Hellzapoppin'. He was also a singer and a dancer in vaudeville.

In the early 1940s he moved to Hollywood, in an attempt to make it big in the movies. But only bit parts were offered to him. His luck changed in 1948 when he was given the role of Superman – the first actor to portray this character on film. Here is what he thought at the time: “I thought it was a publicity stunt. I didn't think you could ever put Superman on film.”

This first movie was a serial that had 15 episodes. They described Superman’s arrival on Earth, getting a job at the Daily Planet newspaper, and meeting Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen. He fought against a villain known as the Spider Lady.

Following his stint as Superman, he still had trouble finding good roles. He sometimes said that playing Superman hurt his career.

In 1951, he was offered the part of Superman for the television version, but he refused it. In 1971, he published an autobiography entitled A Job for Superman.

In 1983 Alyn made his final movie, the horror movie Scalps, and in 1988 he appeared in  the Superman 50th Anniversary Special as himself.

Kirk Alyn died in 1999.

Quote of the Day:
“In this lifetime we are like Superman who must remain disguised as the nerdy newspaper journalist Clark Kent, or Harry Potter and his friends who are not allowed to do magic while they are on holiday, away from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry... but even Harry Potter and Clark Kent get to tap into their ‘special powers’ once in a while, especially when the going gets tough.”
