Friday Hatpin Chin
Dancers are
often reminded “Don’t look at the floor”. This is a common bad habit and
usually means the student is feeling unsure or unstable. But sometimes it only
happens during downward movements, like pliés, or coming off a relevé.
In the
category of “Negative Images” is this one: Imagine a hatpin under your chin,
with the point just touching your skin. For those who are unfamiliar with the
term, a hatpin, according to Merriam Webster is: “a long straight pin with
an ornamented head that is used to keep a hat in place”.
If you drop
your head down, the pin will stick into your chin and provide an immediate and
uncomfortable reminder!
