Freaky Friday Hatpin Chin

Freaky Friday Hatpin Chin

Dancers are often reminded “Don’t look at the floor”. This is a common bad habit and usually means the student is feeling unsure or unstable. But sometimes it only happens during downward movements, like pliés, or coming off a relevé.

In the category of “Negative Images” is this one: Imagine a hatpin under your chin, with the point just touching your skin. For those who are unfamiliar with the term, a hatpin, according to Merriam Webster is: “a long straight pin with an ornamented head that is used to keep a hat in place”.

If you drop your head down, the pin will stick into your chin and provide an immediate and uncomfortable reminder!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #21mm:
“To prevent looking down, imagine a hatpin under your chin.”
