Technical Tuesday Eyebrow Expression

Technical Tuesday Eyebrow Expression

There are four muscles near the eyebrows that control eyebrow position and facial expressions. They are:

Frontalis: lifts the brows
Orbicularis oculi: closes the eyelids and draws the brows toward the eyes
Corrugator superiocili: draws the eyebrow downward and produces vertical wrinkles in the forehead. Often called the “frowning muscle”
Procerus: pulls the skin between the eyebrows down.

Other interesting facts about the eyebrow: The density (about 250 hairs per eyebrow) remains constant throughout life, (unless altered deliberately); we are the only species to have eyebrows against bare skin; and the eyebrows protect the eyes from sunlight and sweat.

For dancers, the eyebrows are a critical part of facial expressions for portraying different roles and characters.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Anatomical Secret: 26w
“There are four muscles near the eyebrows that control facial expressions.”
