Wacky Wednesday Hang of It

Students often have difficulty feeling the downward energy part of the two-way energy that is required for proper dance technique. For most pupils, the up energy isn’t hard to feel, but the down…

To help with the down sensation, imagine being a Halloween skeleton hanging in the air, suspended by a string located at the top of the head. Imagine the sensation of gravity pulling gently downward on this skeleton.

That’s the downward energy! Now you have the “hang of it”!

Technical Tuesday Hyoid Bone

Unlike other bones in the skeleton, the hyoid bone doesn’t join to any other bones. It is located between the thyroid cartilage and the chin, at the base of the mandible (see illustration). Although it doesn’t join to other bones, it provides a place for muscular attachment – specifically those of the floor of the mouth, plus the larynx, pharynx, and epiglottis.

The hyoid bone is divided into three parts:  the body of the hyoid, the greater cornua (greater horn), and the lesser cornua (lesser horn).

Like other bones, the hyoid can be broken, but this would require considerable force.

Marvelous Monday Hub

If you watch accomplished dancers, you will notice that the majority of the time the torso, and particularly the pelvis, doesn’t move, or change, much. That’s because everything works off of the torso and pelvis.

The pelvis is like the hub of a wheel. The hub of a wheel is attached to the axle, and must stay firm so the wheel can turn. If the hub (pelvis) tilts or twists the wheel will no longer work efficiently – or at all.

So think of the torso, and particularly the pelvis, as the hub of a wheel. The arms, legs, and the head all work from that stable place.

Sunday Rule

The internet is a vast resource of rules and affirmations that claim to make one’s life happier. This is a good and bad thing. Good because it’s always helpful to consider things that make us happier, but bad because there is so much out there the sheer volume of it can make us unhappy when we try to sort it all out.

Instead, determine one single thing that works for you. It will be different for every individual. Do you worry too much? Overanalyze everything?  Today’s Link of the Day, and today’s Quote of the Day offer different rules to help in whatever area you need.

Saturday Pull Back Statute

In tap, there is an important step called a pull back. In ballet, however, there are no pull backs. No pull back steps, and no pulling back in a dancer’s technique.

This pulling back happens when dancers are not sure of the steps, or are unsure in their ability to do something. This causes a hesitation and a literal pulling back in the body which severely compromises the dancer’s ability to – well, dance.

It takes some fearlessness to overcome the habit of pulling back, as well as a good understanding of the correct methods used to achieve difficult steps.

But mostly, it requires the dancer to trust the process and themselves. (See Ballet Statute #99, http://balletwebb.blogspot.com/search?q=trust+the+process)
