Throwback Thursday and Vera Fokina
Born Vera Petrovna Antomova on August 3,1886, Vera Fokine, or Vera Fokina, studied dance at the Russian Imperial School. She graduated in 1904 and one year later married famous choreographer Michel Fokine. Together they performed with Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes.
Due to the Russian Revolution, in 1918 they fled the country and moved to New York. Here they founded a company in which Vera had starring roles. They also taught dance, and performed in many venues, including vaudeville and Broadway. Called the “Pearl of the Ballet”, she was not only a principal ballet dancer but also brought modern Russian dance technique to the United States.
Vera Fokine died in New York on July 29, 1958. She is buried beside her husband at Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum in Westchester County New York.
