Throwback Thursday and Vera Trefilova
Vera Trefilova was born in 1875 and graduated from the St.
Petersburg Imperial School of Ballet. In 1906 she became prima ballerina of the
Maryinsky Theatre, and was particularly known for her portrayal of Aurora in
The Sleeping Beauty. However, she resigned from the company in 1910, because of
“jealous intriques” according the several website.
In 1915 she returned to the stage after leave of absence,
but this time not as a dancer but as an actress. But soon the Russian
Revolution of 1917 forced her to move and she relocated to Paris and opened a
school. Here she stayed, dying there on July 11, 1943.
According to the website Andros on Ballet http://michaelminn.net/andros/biographies/trefilova_vera/,
“a sparkling prima ballerina at the
Maryinsky in 1906, she could dash off 32 fouettés with ease.” He also
states: “In 1921 Diaghilev invited her to
dance Princess Aurora in the London performances of Sleeping Princess. The
night before the opening she threatened to kill herself unless he released her
from her contract, saying she was too old and the spark of her youth was gone.
Diaghilev ignored her and the next night, looking as if she was 16, triumphed
in the role of Aurora.”
