Fun Friday Heads Up

Fun Friday Heads Up

It is sad to say, but often positions of the head are taught as an afterthought to everything else in classical ballet. They are regarded as an embellishment – probably because they do add so much to the beauty of a dancer’s line.

Instead, they should be taught at the same time everything else is presented. This is because the head positions do more than embellish – they provide a crucial counterweight to all movements and positions! Their purpose is not only decorative but practical.

According to the book Human Body Dynamics: Classical Mechanics and Human Movement by Aydin Tozeren, the average percentage of weight for each body part is as follows:
• Trunk (Chest, back and abdomen) – 50.80%,
• Thigh – 9.88%
• Head – 7.30%

Therefore, the head, at more than 7% of the body’s weight, could seriously unbalance everything if placed incorrectly.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Secret #5h:
“Correct head positions add beauty plus a counterweight to all positions.”

Quote of the Day:
“How one walks through the world, the endless small adjustments of balance, is affected by the shifting weights of beautiful things.”
