Technical Tuesday Semitendinosus

Technical Tuesday Semitendinosus

Dancers are usually very familiar with their hamstrings. The semitendinosus muscle is one of three muscles that make up this group. The other two muscles are the semimembranosus muscle and the biceps femoris. The semitendinosus muscle lies between them.

Together these three hamstring muscles flex the knee and extend the hip. They also help rotate the tibia in pliĆ© and help rotate the femur when the leg is extended.  A part of the sciatic nerve acts as the sensory and motor nerve for this muscle.

Hamstring strains are common in dancers and athletes, especially when insufficient warm-up exercises are performed.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Anatomical Secret #102:
“The semitendinosus muscle is one of three hamstring muscles that are located at the back of the thigh.”
