Saturday Stop Statute

Saturday Stop Statute

There is no stopping in a grand plié. None. Zero. Especially at the bottom which seems to be the favorite stopping point. Scary. Not to mention the fact that this is hardly a place to have a photograph taken and unfortunately the bottom of a grand plié seems to be a place that photographers often capture.

Grand pliés can be a high injury zone, especially for the knees, and dropping to the bottom and/or stopping and starting increase this risk. A grand plié must move smoothly and continuously through the four parts (see previous blogs), with no stopping at any point. This helps insure an injury-free ride and allows the strength-building properties of the step to work effectively.

Therefore, do not stop in a grand plié. Otherwise  a trap door will open beneath your feet and whoosh – a quick trip down to the ballet dungeon.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Statute # 97:
“There is no stopping in a grand plié.”
