Happy New Year and Resolutions

Happy New Year and Resolutions

Have you ever wondered where the tradition of New Year’s resolutions began? It started with the Babylonians – over 4,000 years ago. The modern tradition has its roots much closer to us in history. It started in the 1800s, and the first recorded use of the phrase “new year resolution” cropped up in a Boston newspaper in 1813.

About one third of us make resolutions, but only 8% (gasp!) follow through on them. I’d be willing to bet that number is much higher in dancers.

Anyway, to make sure you follow through on your resolutions, treat them as you would any other goal: make it specific (that way you can track your progress), and develop a plan on how to achieve it – then follow through. Everything dancers do every day!

Happy New Year everyone!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
New Year’s Secret #22fff:
“The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions began with the Babylonians.
