Thursday and Geneviève Gosselin
Geneviève-Adelaide
Gosselin was a French ballerina who was born in 1791 in Paris. The daughter of
a ballet master, she and her siblings went on to dance with the Paris Opera
Ballet.
She
studied under Jean-Francois Coulon, and trained at the Paris Opera in beginning
in 1806 – she was about 15 years old. Her "big break" came when she danced a leading role in Flore et Zéphire, a ballet by Didelot that went on to become one of his most popular.
It was also one of the first romantic ballets he choreographed.
Her
technique was described as excellent, and she is also remembered as one of the
first dancers to perform on the tips of her toes. Years after her death, a
critic stated that he believed Marie Taglioni was the reincarnation of Geneviève
Gosselin.
Geneviève
Gosselin died young. She was only 27 when she passed away on June 17, 1818.
