Wild Wednesday Two Spools

Wild Wednesday Two Spools

Good posture for ballet requires that the pelvis and the rib cage stay aligned with each other – most of the time. One of the best ways to visualize this is to imagine two spools, like the old wooden ones sewing thread is wound on. Teachers can use two real spools as a visual aid to demonstrate this concept.

One spool represents the rib cage, the other one represents the pelvis. These two spools must be placed so the holes are accurately lined up.

When a dancer is simply standing, this isn’t much of a problem (hopefully). But in positions like attitude devant, there is often a tendency for the ribs to poke forward, destroying the alignment of the spools. Scary.

Of course there are times when the spools cannot and should not be aligned, like arabesque, etc.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Ballet Secret # 1zzz:
“Good posture should include two aligned spools.”
