Throwback Thursday and Margot Lander

Throwback Thursday and Margot Lander

Margot Lander was born on August 23, 1910 in Denmark. She became one of the most important ballerinas in Denmark.

From 1917 until 1928 (when she joined the company), she studied at the Royal Danish Ballet School. In 1933 she was promoted to principal dancer, and in 1942 she became the first dancer in Denmark to achieve the title of prima ballerina.

She was known for her grace and personality, but was not known as a technical virtuoso. She was particularly noted for her roles in Coppelia and Swan Lake, although she also danced many roles in the Bournonville repertory and in Harold Lander’s ballets. The Dance Encyclopedia states: “She was the unique star of the Royal Danish Ballet of her time with the international style of rare brilliance and poetry”.

She was married to Harold Lander in 1932, but they divorced in 1950. She then married Erik Nyhom.

Margot Lander retired from performing in 1948, and died on July 18, 1961.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Dance History Factoid #134:
“Margot Lander was one of the most important Danish ballerinas of the 20th century.”
