Throwback Thursday and Ballerina Ghosts
Although Halloween is over, I thought it would be worth mentioning that many theaters around
the world are said to be home to “ballerina ghosts”.
Does the ghost of Anna
Pavlova still haunt the Palace Theater in London? Supposedly her specter has
been glimpsed – “halfway through the stage floor”. This is because the current
stage floor is higher than the one Pavlova performed on. There is another
ghost in this same theater that is said to be that of an unknown young dancer
who committed suicide in a back staircase.
The Lyceum Theater in
Crewe, England, is believed to be haunted by several spirits, including a
dancer who killed herself in her dressing room. Today many cast members say
they have seen her ghost watching performances from the wings.
At Broadway’s New
Amsterdam Theatre, one of the most frequently experienced ghosts is said to
that of Olive Thomas, a Zeigfeld dancer. She appears so often that photographs
of her have placed at each entrance so workers remember to say hello to her,
and thus keep her mischief to a minimum.
There are many other theater
ghosts that may or may not ballerinas. A Google search will reveal many other
stories and sightings.

for next Halloween.
