Fun Friday Circuit
Dancers know Ballet
Secret #4a: “A tendu never leaves the
floor. Otherwise it is not a tendu”.
But knowing doesn’t always translate
into doing, so here is another way of
thinking about tendues that will (hopefully)
keep them in contact with the floor at all times.
Remember those
science demonstrations where a professor touched two wires together to complete
a circuit and thus made a light bulb light up? That’s how to imagine a tendu. When
the foot is on the floor the “circuit” is complete and the dancer continues to move. But if there is
any interruption in the “circuit” the power is cut off and the dancer suddenly
freezes in position. Gulp!
Therefore, to prevent freezes, the tendu must stay in
contact with the floor.
