Sunday Motivation

Sunday Motivation

On Sundays I always blog about a “Motivational Secret”. But what, exactly, is motivation? Is it something we can harness and call up whenever we need it? Or is it a fleeting, ephemeral will ‘o the wisp that is completely unpredictable? It is a bit of both, and it is a complex subject.

A dictionary would define motivation as “the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way”, or “the general desire or willingness of someone to do something.”  Okay, we all knew that, more or less.

Here’s another, more psychologically based answer: “the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviors”. Now we’re getting somewhere. This is probably what dancers mean when they use the word “motivation”. Something that keeps us on track – or “goal-oriented”. It amounts to “why” someone does something.

There are actually theories of motivation: drive theory, instinct theory, and humanistic theory. I’m sure there are more. Most importantly, for dancers in particular, are the three major components to motivation: Activation (decision to start doing something); Persistence (continued effort toward a goal); and Intensity (how vigorously one pursues a goal).

So, if your motivation is lacking, it can help to figure out which of these three areas might be lacking. It is also helpful to ask yourself: “Why do I dance?”
