Saturday Waist Up Statute

Saturday Waist Up Statute

The majority of any audience tends to watch dancers from the waist up – and they are mostly drawn to facial expressions. This is important because dancers spend their lives working, shaping, and perfecting their technique, especially their feet and legs, often neglecting everything else.

With the exception of other dancers in the audience, it is the artistry, the emotions and the facial expressions that will draw an audience in. Not that technique isn’t important, but we (dancers and teachers), need to remember how equally important facial expressions and the use of the upper body can be.

Keep honing that technique but remember to cultivate the whole picture.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Statute #92:
“The majority of the audience watches a dancer from the waist up.”

Quote of the Day:
“I made mistakes in drama. I thought drama was when actors cried. But drama is when the audience cries.”
Frank Capra
