Throwback Thursday and
Rowena Jackson
Born on March 24, 1926
in Invercargill, New Zealand, Rowena Othlie Jackson became the first student
from this country to win a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dancing in England.
In 1946 she entered the Sadler’s Wells school and went on to join their
company. From 1954-1957 she danced with the Royal Ballet.
Rowena Jackson was known
for her amazing turns. A Dictionary of Modern Ballet says: “Rowena Jackson has a special gift for fast
and brilliant turns. She holds the world record for multiple fouettés performed sur place.”
In 1958 she married fellow
dancer Philip Chatfield and the following year retired from the Royal Ballet
and returned to New Zealand, becoming artistic director of the New Zealand
Ballet Company.
The Rowena Jackson
Retirement Village in New Zealand is named for her.
