Mad Monday Crochet Hook

Mad Monday Crochet Hook

You will remember Ballet Secret #4k: A tendu leads with the heel when moving toward the front, and the toes when moving toward the back.

Here is another thing to think about that will help in maintaining a turned-out leg in tendu devant.  Imagine someone standing in front of you pulling gently on the working heel with a crochet hook – or a small vaudeville hook, or some similar item.

This helps fine-tune the sensation (which should never stop until the dancer does), of constantly rotating the working leg.  In a tendu devant it is all too easy to relax the turn-out and allow the heel to droop toward the floor (gasp!) especially at the end (or outward-most) position of the tendu. Here an even stronger pull from the crochet hook must be felt.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #4p:
“To keep the heel rotating forward in a tendu devant, imagine someone standing in front of you pulling it with a crochet hook.”
