Technical Tuesday Tombé Facings

Technical Tuesday Tombé Facings

There are only three places for the foot in tendu, dégagé, développé, etc. I’ve blogged about these positions before:   Ballet Secret 4i: Tendues only go in three specific directions: front, side and back.

The problems occur when more variables are added. Especially in tombé, when I often see the leading foot extend in a direction that doesn’t exist in classical ballet. It is usually somewhere between devant and à la seconde, and the upper body is often twisted.  Not good. It is important for students to understand the geometry of Ballet Secret #4i and place their working leg either in front of their belly button, behind their standing heel, or to the side, (in their best à la seconde position) at the beginning of any tombé. There are no other choices.

This keeps the dancing crisp and clean and makes the dancer’s line exquisite.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #5g:
Recognize the proper body facing required for a tombé.”

“If you have no good drive in you, your life will not be steered through a good direction. It will miss its destined station. Passion or drive is what moves the vehicle of a fulfilled life.”
