Marvelous Monday Piqué

Marvelous Monday Piqué

As you will remember, a piqué is a “hot stove step”. It touches the floor with the tips of the toes as quickly as one would if the floor were a hot stove. That’s quick!

During a piqué, if the foot isn’t fully stretched, and/or the energy isn’t radiating continuously outward through the toes, the action of the piqué will cause the toes to squash against the floor. And as we all know, there is no squashing in ballet:

So, think of sending extra energy down the leg and out beyond the toes during any piqué. This will prevent squashing or squishing.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Ballet Secret #4o:
“Fully extend the toes to prevent squishing them during a piqué.”
