It's Fun Friday. Period.

It's Fun Friday. Period.

I refer you today to Wednesday’s post: Ballet Secret #7rr, which states “Always finish each movement or combination.”  Because this is an important – important – thing, I am going to mention another way to think about it.

A properly finished set of steps is like a proper sentence in writing. If I wrote this blog and never used any punctuation, particularly periods, it would be very difficult to read. A “paragraph” or “sentence” in dance is similar. A lovely finish at the end of a combination in dance is like a period at the end of a sentence. It provides a satisfactory conclusion and lets the audience know it is finished, and hopefully gives them a beautiful moment to savor and remember.

The next time you are tempted to walk off the floor disappointed in some step you didn’t accomplish, remember that adding a wonderful finish can help save the whole combination. Whatever it was that didn’t work will be better next time, and you’ll feel better knowing you saw it through to the end.   Hmmmm. That’s sounds like a good life lesson, too.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #7tt:
“A good finish is like a period at the end of a sentence.”

Quote of the Day:
“Whatever it takes to finish things, finish. You will learn more from a glorious failure than you ever will from something you never finished.”
