Terrific Tuesday Collar Bones and Rainy Days

Terrific Tuesday Collar Bones and Rainy Days

In many cultures, prominent collar bones (clavicles) are a sign of beauty. In ballet, it is important that this area of the upper chest remains open, lifted, and level (there is no arching of the back). This is often difficult to do, especially when a dancer is tired, or winded from exertion. In these cases, the chest and upper shoulder areas tend to cave in and droop forward. And, you will remember, there is no drooping in ballet.

To prevent this sort of drooping, imagine standing (with good posture for dance) in a gentle rain. If the upper body is correctly aligned, raindrops will begin to collect in the spaces just above the collar bones. Eventually two beautiful little pools will develop.
