Mad Monday Sandwich Filling

Mad Monday Sandwich Filling

Due to the nature of turn-out in classical ballet, many balletic positions should be “flat”. This is usually from the armpits down, since the arms and their curved port de bras are less flat.

Positions like sous-sus, cou de pied, first, second, and fifth positions and especially retiré are some of the “flat” positions created because the legs are (or should be!) turned out. In other words, any of these positions (and others) could fit easily between two pieces of bread. Sandwich filling!

When performing any flat position or pose, imagine that the lower part of the body (below the armpits), is in a sandwich. If anything is in the wrong place (twisted or turned-in), a hole would be poked in the bread. And no holes are ever allowed in a balletic sandwich.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #7mm:
“ Many balletic positions could fit inside a sandwich without poking holes in the bread.”

Quote of the Day:
“Sandwich every bit of criticism between two layers of praise.”
