Terrific Tuesday Continuous

Terrific Tuesday Continuous

By now you know that a plié is a movement, not a position, and that a grand plié has four parts. Both are Ballet Secrets I have blogged about before. This brings us to another important plié concept that is related to the first two: a plié must be continuous.

That’s right, a plié doesn’t hesitate, pause, or, stop anywhere along the line. It is like a train or an airplane that is nonstop – it keeps on moving. This may sound easy, but it is all too common to see a dancer “sitting” at the bottom of a grand plié, or pausing at the bottom of a demi -plié. This makes it extraordinarily difficult to regenerate the energy needed to lift out of a halted plié.

So imagine your pliés as nonstop flights, and don’t fall out of the sky.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #2n:
“A plié is continuous, it never stops.”

“Thankfully, dreams can change. If we'd all stuck with our first dream, the world would be overrun with cowboys and princesses.”
