Mad Monday Mush

Mad Monday Mush

Control of the abdominal area is important, even critical, for maintaining correct posture and alignment. Unfortunately, this a frequently neglected place. Students start out remembering to engage their abdominal muscles, but as their concentration shifts to other things, the stomach muscles relax and turn to mush.

There is no mush in ballet. The habit of keeping the abdominals engaged is developed over time and by frequent reminders. Eventually it will become a habit and less thought will be required.
At any time, if the abdominal area feels mushy, it should ring alarm bells in the dancer’s mind. Immediate action must be taken to firm up that area, and with it the alignment.

No mushy middles!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #1kk:
“The abdominal area should never be mushy.”
