Terrific Tuesday Space Suit

Terrific Tuesday Space Suit

I’ve blogged many times about the arm positions and the correct pathways that the arms must follow.  One of the bad habits I often see in students is when they allow their arms to come too close to their body or their head.  This is particularly true when bringing the arms up from fifth en bas to fifth en haut. So often this is when the arms don’t resemble anything like a balletic port de bras, and instead look like the dancer is trying to take a tee shirt off over his/her head.  Not good!

Instead, always imagine wearing a space suit.  A nice, big inflatable, balloon-like space suit.  If this suit were actually being worn, then the arms simply couldn’t come too close to the body!  The port de bras would automatically be correctly placed.

Perhaps for Halloween some of you could get a space suit costume and try this out in reality!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #6t:
“ Imagine wearing a spacesuit so the arms cannot come too close to the body.”
