Monday Magnetism

Monday Magnetism

Secret number 4a states that a tendu never leaves the floor.  But this is more difficult to do than it seems.  Often the foot maintains a good, steady contact until the last minute when it levitates.  Now it is no longer a tendu – it is a dégagé.

To help keep a tendu from having an identity crisis and to help it stick to the floor at all times, pretend there is a magnetic track under the floor.  The tendu is drawn along this track, like a monorail train that gets its power from the track.  The tendu never loses contact with the power in this track, or all movement will stop – bam!  The dancer will be halted with one foot slightly off the floor and no way to go back down, because the power is cut off.

So in any tendu, keep the power on by maintaining contact with the floor.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #4f:
“Imagine a magnetic track in the floor that powers the tendu and prevents it from lifting.”
