Wonderful Wednesday Fired Up

Wonderful Wednesday Fired Up

Frappés are designed to teach the dancer how to move the feet quickly and efficiently.  The word itself means “to strike”.  Most students know that definition, but many do not understand exactly how to make it happen.

I have blogged before about how the foot in a frappé should move as fast as a snake striking.  Another image for frappé is this:  Imagine the foot striking the floor the same way a match is struck in order to produce a flame.  If the movement isn’t aggressive enough, the match won’t light.

So light a fire when you frappé!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #10b:
“A frappé should move like striking a match.”
