Tuesday Temps Levé

Tuesday Temps Levé

Jumping on into the week, it’s time to discuss simple jumps like temps levé.  One major problem dancers have with all jumps is the tendency to hold one’s breath.  This can be particularly problematic when a lady holds her breath as her partner is trying to lift her.  She instantly becomes as heavy as a piece of granite.

One thing that is not only helpful but also entertaining, is to have students sing a short song (like Row Row Row Your Boat) while they do a series of temps levés in first position.  If they can sing normally they know their breathing is being done correctly.  If they can’t, they will know immediately that there is a problem.  And recognizing a problem is the first step in solving it!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #15j:
“To prevent holding one’s breath while jumping, sing a short song.”
