Saturday Brick Wall

Saturday Brick Wall

When performing a pirouette en dedans there are two possible preparations.  1. The working leg goes directly to retiré (it does not pass “Go”, it does not collect $200); or 2.  The working leg passes through à la seconde and then to retiré.

I like to teach the second one, partly because this is the same preparation that will be used for other turns – particularly à la second turns.  If the preparation is correct for en dedans pirouettes, it will work just as effectively for the rest.  Multiple benefits!

The secret is this:  the deepest part of the plié in the preparation is when the leg is in à la seconde.  At this point, the body is facing en face – directly front.  Imagine the leg hitting a brick wall in second – then immediately to retiré.  Brick wall and up!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #14b:
“In a pirouette en dedans, the deepest part of the plié is when the leg hits à la seconde.”

Quote of the Day:
“Brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls aren't there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to show us how badly we want things.”
