Marvelous Monday and Sticky Stamps

Marvelous Monday and Sticky Stamps

I have blogged before about the two ways the foot is allowed to leave the floor in ballet.  One of these:  peeling the foot off and lifting it directly to cou de pied, is today’s subject.

When removing the foot from the floor, teachers often direct their students to “peel it off” or “roll through the foot”.  I use these terms also.

The image I use is that of peeling a stamp off a letter – as though you just realized you needed to remove the stamp right after you affixed it to the envelope.  This “stickiness” allows a gradual lifting “through the foot” and assures that the foot is fully pointed the moment it leaves the floor.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #16b:
“When lifting the foot off the floor, imagine a stamp being peeled off an envelope.”
