Monday Merry-Go-Round

Monday Merry-Go-Round
An important concept in ballet technique is that of the “central axis”.  This can be visualized as a pole running through the body, and exiting through the floor.
The body actually arranges itself around this central pole of support depending upon the specific balletic position.  For example, retiré is relatively simple – the pole runs from the floor, up the supporting leg, extends though the center of the torso and out thorough the top of the head.
However, for positions like arabesque, it is different.  The pole of support still involves the standing leg, but because of the “up-and-forward” placement of the torso, the central axis comes out of the lower back, and extends from there, upward though space.  This can be imagined as a merry-go-round animal with the pole extending upward from the center of the particular animal.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #1r
“Imagine a merry-go-round animal to visualize the central axis of support.”
