Sunday Thought: What Would You Do If…?

 What Would You Do If…?

A thought that seems to help many of my students with their motivation is this question:  “What would you do, and how hard would you try, if you knew you could not fail?”  So often the fear of failure is what stands in the way of progress.

Of course it is a bit of circular logic, since we can’t know the future and whether we will actually succeed or fail.  But without effort, we will most probably fail, or simply give up, but with enough effort achievement at some level is almost a certainly.  And beyond that – who knows?

It works in all aspects of life, but particularly in artistic pursuits.  Writers, musicians, and artists all strive for an unattainable perfection, and are prone to bouts of discouragement.  But if we look at it differently, perhaps it will stoke the fires of inspiration when we need it most.

So ask yourself:  “What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?”.
