National Frappé Day?

National Frappé Day?
No, actually, we missed it.  It was last month – on October 7th.  And, alas, it was not even established to honor the dance step (it honored the frothy coffee drink that originated in Greece in the 1950s).  But since we are on the subject, let’s discuss that fun step, the battement frappé.
The frappé is an aggressive step and is used to strengthen the feet and develop the power and sharpness of attack needed for jumps.  To foster that attack, I tell my students that when the frappé is fully extended, the movement stops, but it is critical that the energy continues.  It is as though a laser beam radiates from the toes outward, following the direction of the pointed foot out into space.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret #10
“When performing a frappé correctly, the movement stops when the foot is fully extended, but the energy continues – like a laser beam.”

Quote of the Day:

“Your day will go the way the corners of your mouth turn.”
