Throwback Thursday Factoids
Throwback Thursday seems like a good way to add some
fascinating dance history to this blog. Yes, “fascinating” and “history” are
not contradictory terms!
The most common dance history question is usually: “Where did ballet come from?” It is not a simple answer, but ballet as we think of it today is usually
traced back to France in the 1600s, and the royal court of King Louis XIV. Entire books have been written on the colorful
and fascinating King Louis, for whom life and art were one. He was often called “The Sun King” because of
his performance as Apollo. He danced in
many court ballets over a period of about eighteen years. In 1661 Louis XIV founded the Academie Royal de Danse, essentially the
first school of ballet, thus beginning the evolution toward today’s world of
classical ballet.
