Lamppost of Support

Lamppost of Support

When standing on one leg, all the postural images discussed previously still apply, but with some additions.  Dancers tend to focus more on the working leg, often  at the expense of a strong supporting leg.  Instead, the supporting leg needs to have at least as much attention, if not more.  Also, concentration on the standing leg should happen before the working leg leaves the floor.

The image I use is this:  imagine the supporting leg as a strong lamppost, solid and unshakable.  The energy patterns discussed in previous posts are still active, with energy being send down through the floor (at the base of the “lamppost”), and up through the top of the head, as always, as well as throughout the extremities (arms, working leg).

The Link of the Day is a clip of a wonderful dance sequence from Singing in the Rain, and it features a lamppost, as well as the extraordinary talent of Gene Kelly.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #1h:

Imagine the supporting leg as a strong, solid lamppost.”
