Wacky Wednesday Pirouette Stacking
Dancers are always trying to increase
the number of pirouettes they can do. And students are simply trying to get the
hang of turning altogether. The concept I call pirouette stacking can help both
parties.
Pirouette stacking is this: begin with a
standard preparation but do only a ¼ turn,
spotting the wall in the appropriate place. Strive to suspend the balance in
retiré for a
moment or more before putting the foot down. Continue on, doing a ¼ turn (spotting
each wall) until you reach the starting point.
Now try doing ½ turns, repeating the
process – spotting back-wall, front-wall. Then move to single turns, and onward
to more. Voila! Pirouette stacking. This same method can be used to add that extra pirouette that is out of your normal comfort level. If you are doing two
pirouettes regularly, start doing two and
a half. It’s fun and you’ll soon be doing that extra full turn “accidentally”.
