Throwback Thursday and Phyllis Bedells
Ethel Phyllis Bedells was born on August
9, 1893 in Bristol, England. She studied ballet with such notables as Adolph
Bolm, Enrico Cecchetti, and Anna Pavlova.
In 1907 she became a dancer at the London
Empire Theatre and in 1914 became their first British prima ballerina. In 1916
she began performing in West End musical revues and opera ballets at Covent
Garden. She was also an actress, known for Fairyland
(1916) and The Land of Mystery
(1920).
In 1920 she went on to become one of the
founding members of the Royal Academy of Dance and helped create its
syllabus. She was a dancer and choreographer of the Camargo Society, and in
1931 she performed as a guest artist with the Vic-Wells Ballet.
In 1935 she retired from the stage and
became a teacher and an examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance. In 1954 her
autobiography, My Dancing Days was
published. The annual Phyllis Bedells
Bursary was established in her honor in 1979.
Phyllis Bedells died on May 2, 1985 in
Oxfordshire, England.
