Mad Monday Dotted Line
Today’s secret involves the path of any
series of turns. It is similar to Ballet Secret #14e: “The
leading foot in a chaîné must always fall in line with the intended ending
location.”
Whenever a
dancer performs a series of turns, like a set of piqués across the floor – or more challenging – a set of turns in a circle,
it is important that the path the
dancer follows is consistent. If the path is across the floor the traveling
line must stay straight, if the path is a manège the
circle must stay circular and not become a squashed egg shape. That would be
scary.
Here’s the
key: imagine every time the leading foot hits the floor it makes a dot.
Each dot follows the necessary shape (circular or straight), creating an
imaginary dotted line that the dancer travels.
