Fun Friday Tabletop

Fun Friday Tabletop

The arms in a first port de bras move laterally ("moving to the side") through space. There are no dips, curves or embellishments. The correct shape of the arms is maintained throughout. It’s like “brushing crumbs off a table” ( See Ballet Secret # 6o: http://balletwebb.blogspot.com/search?q=crumbs).

You can literally feel this by using an actual tabletop. Sit with the lower ribs pressed against the table (adjust your chair to make this possible), and then shape your arms in first. Now brush them along the tabletop as though brushing crumbs off as the arms move from first into second.

Now you know the correct sensation of a first port de bras!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Ballet Secret #20gg:
“ Sit against a table place at rib height and brush crumbs off the top.”

“There are times when wisdom cannot be found in the chambers of parliament or the halls of academia but at the unpretentious setting of the kitchen table.”
