Terminology Tuesday Maître

Terminology Tuesday Maître

Most dancers, especially those in a ballet company, know the terms ballet master or ballet mistress. Maître or Maîtresse de ballet is the same thing in French.

A ballet master or mistress is the one responsible for training dancers in a company. They usually give class and conduct rehearsals. Sometimes the director (or directors) of small ballet companies act as the ballet master or mistress in addition to their directing duties.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Terminology Secret #80:
“Maître or Maîtresse de ballet mean ballet master or ballet mistress.”
