Terminology Tuesday Emboîté

Terminology Tuesday Emboîté

Most of us are familiar with the step called emboîté (as seen at the end of the coda of Peasant Pas de Deux- see the Link of the Day below at 9:24). But did you ever wonder what the word itself means?

It means “boxed” or “fitted together”. The term comes from the close fitting of the feet that are like a snugly fitted lid on a box. The Russian and Cecchetti schools use this word, but the French school uses the term “petit jeté” and they only do this step on pointe or demi-pointe (according to Gail Grant’s Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet).

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Terminology Secret #75:
“Emboîté means ‘boxed’.”
