Mad Monday Following

Mad Monday Following

Dancers tend to put their attention on areas like their legs and their turnout. That’s great up to a point (no pun intended). But when a problem arises here is another way to proceed.

Focus on your following arm. Think of this as the two Fs: Following Focus. No matter what you are doing, from pirouettes to jumps, or just the first combination in the center, think about the following arm.

Often this arm is forgotten and it droops (and there is no drooping in ballet), or it simply doesn’t have enough energy in it to counterbalance whatever else is going on.

There’s that equal and opposite energy thing again! Following Focus!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Ballet Secret #16hh:
“Try focusing on the following arm.”

“She who follows another’s course, finds a sure path to her own remorse.”
